Health and Safety Certificate Training

Build Safety Skills — and Explore What’s Next

The United Steelworkers, in partnership with the Labour Education Centre, is offering a series of Health & Safety certification workshops, with an added introduction to entrepreneurship, designed for workers who want to strengthen their safety knowledge and explore different ways of using their skills at work.

These workshops are practical, accessible, and support people whether they are entering new jobs, changing roles, or thinking about working more independently.

What these workshops are (and aren’t)

Are: Recognized health & safety certifications
Are: Practical, and work-focused
Are: Relevant for employees, contractors, and people considering self-employment
Are: Supportive and accessible

Not: Academic or theory-heavy
Not: A business startup course
Not: High-pressure or fast-paced training

What you’ll learn

Depending on the workshops offered, you may complete certifications such as:

WHMIS
Working at Heights
• Hand Tools
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Confined Space Awareness

Alongside the certifications, you’ll also take part in a short introduction to entrepreneurship, which will help you:

• Think about how your skills could be used in different work settings
• Understand what self-employment or small business work can involve
• Learn about basic responsibilities, safety considerations, and decision-making when working independently

This is about building awareness and options, not pressure to start a business.

Who this is for

These workshops may be a good fit if you:

• Need or want health & safety certifications for work
• Are entering new roles or industries
• Want to strengthen your safety knowledge and confidence on the job
• Are curious about using your skills in different ways, including contract or self-employment work
